Celebrating Sonny Joy-Hogg

Sonny is an emerging architectural designer with both Jamaican and Indian heritage. He received a bachelors degree in Architecture from Virginia Tech in 2016, and since graduation has worked for both Commonwealth Architects and Baskervill in Richmond, Virginia. Sonny is also a proud Alpha Phi Alpha alumna, and gives much credit to his wife, Kerri Bain, for centering him and helping him to focus on pursuits bigger than himself.

In 2022, Sonny received the AIA Virginia 2022 Emerging Professional Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of emerging leaders in Virginia for their contributions to the profession in design, research, education, discourse, as well as service to the profession, mentorship, or service to the community.

The power of Sonny’s myriad of gifts sets him apart as a thought leader in the profession, and is most evident in the impression that he leaves upon those he works with. Clients revere his approachable, attentive presence and his incredible ability to distill complex emotions into thoughtful ideas.

His human-centered approach is a common theme throughout his design work, professional achievements, and personal passions — which includes work on the William & Mary’s Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved, dedicated in 2022 as a place to remember nearly 200 known and unknown men and women enslaved at the university. Through this effort, Joy-Hogg demonstrated a commitment to the project’s mission and goals and in the end, crafted something that imbues honor and respect for those that came before us.
