Ashleigh shared with us her story as a designer, educator, and community volunteer as well as how she has advocated for herself along the way. Though her journey may not have been as straight forward as she originally expected, Ashleigh has found meaning and satisfaction in her work as both an educator and designer. The top five takeaways from her journey thus far include:

  • Representation Matters

  • Time Waits for No One

  • Make A Decision

  • Advocate for Yourself

  • Making Mistakes is Part of the Journey

Ashleigh is currently on the path to licensure, and looks forward to becoming a licensed architect and being an inspiration for other young women of color seeking a career in architecture.

Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway. ASHLEIGH BREWER

Celebrating Ashleigh Brewer

Ashleigh started her education in the field of engineering, and upon completion of that degree she was motivated to pursue a career in architecture. She aspires to create sustainable architecture that positively impacts individual clients as well as present and future communities.

Ashleigh received her Masters of Architecture from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC and joined Johannas Design Group in 2016. In her free time, she enjoys traveling the world and giving back to the design community through AIA Richmond's Richmond Women in Design (RWiD) committee.

I learned that you should ask for what you want. If I don't want to work 60 hour weeks, and I do want to make a reasonable amount of money and have a social life, then I should ask for those things in the job interview or at least ask if they exist. ASHLEIGH BREWER
